Character and UTF-8 Byte Counter

Count visible characters, Unicode code points, UTF-16 units and UTF-8 bytes. Check title limits, read text files and preview a shorter version.

How it works · Examples · Limits

Choose the right measurement

Four ways to measure the same text
Measurement What it counts
Visible characters Groups that are normally read as one character, including combined accents and emoji sequences. These are Unicode grapheme clusters.
Unicode code points The individual Unicode values that make up the text. One visible character can contain several.
UTF-16 code units The units used for JavaScript string length. A character such as 😀 uses two units.
UTF-8 bytes The size of the text when encoded as UTF-8. This is a storage size, not a character count.

Start with the unit required by the place where you will submit the text. For a custom limit, turn on the limit check and enter a whole number from 0 to 10,000,000. A limit of 0 is valid.

The results show counts both including and excluding whitespace. The whitespace option decides which set is used for your limit. Excluding whitespace removes spaces, tabs, line breaks and other Unicode whitespace from the calculation; it does not edit the original.

A small example

A가😀 contains 3 visible characters, 3 Unicode code points, 4 UTF-16 code units and 8 UTF-8 bytes. The letter A uses 1 byte, 가 uses 3, and 😀 uses 4.

With a 7-byte UTF-8 limit, the text is 1 byte over. The safe shorter version is A가: 4 bytes, with 3 bytes left. It cannot use the last 3 bytes without splitting the emoji, so a shortened result may leave some space unused.

Read a text file without losing your current text

  1. Choose a plain-text file. TXT and CSV are read as text regardless of the filename extension; CSV columns are not imported as a table.
  2. Choose the file’s actual encoding: UTF-8, Korean Windows (EUC-KR / CP949), UTF-16LE or UTF-16BE. The default is UTF-8. Check the program that saved the file if you are unsure.
  3. Read the preview and check that the characters look right. Reading or rereading a file does not replace your current text.
  4. Apply the preview when you are ready. Only then does it replace the text being counted.

Both the original file and its decoded text, when encoded as UTF-8, must fit within 1 MiB (1,048,576 bytes). Pasted text has the same UTF-8 limit. The size check uses the original text before whitespace is excluded or line breaks are normalized.

If a file cannot be read, is cancelled, or does not match the selected encoding, the existing text, results and shortened version remain. A byte-order mark (BOM) can identify an encoding; if it conflicts with your choice, select the matching encoding and read the file again. The tool does not silently replace malformed characters.

This is a plain-text reader. It does not extract text from Word, PDF, Excel workbooks, ZIP archives or UTF-32 files. Export plain UTF-8 text first. If your browser does not support the selected encoding, use a UTF-8 file.

Line breaks and invisible characters

You can count line breaks as written, as LF, or as CRLF. LF uses 1 UTF-8 byte; CRLF uses 2. CRLF is two code points but one visible-character group. This option changes the measurement only.

A preserved BOM character, U+FEFF, counts as 1 character and 3 UTF-8 bytes when whitespace is included. It is left out of the whitespace-excluded count but stays in the original text. Excluding whitespace does not remove every invisible character: for example, a zero-width space, U+200B, is still counted.

The remaining text is counted again after whitespace removal. Combining characters can therefore make the visible-character result different from simply subtracting the number of spaces.

Shorten text without breaking a character

The limit result shows used, remaining and excess length, plus the first position over the limit. The shorter-version preview keeps a prefix of the original and stops before a complete character group would cross the limit. It does not summarize, rewrite or remove spaces from your text.

The original stays unchanged. Copy the original or the shorter version separately, or save either as a UTF-8 TXT file. You can also copy a summary of the counts and settings. Check which output you are saving.

Long previews show only part of the text, but counting and TXT output use the full accepted text. The source line count and whitespace-separated word count are extra measures of length; the word count is not a language-aware analysis.

Until you edit imported text, its original characters, line breaks and BOM are preserved. TXT output uses UTF-8, so it is not a byte-for-byte copy of a file imported in another encoding. Editing in the input box may normalize line breaks to LF, and copying through the clipboard may let your operating system or the receiving app change them. If you exclude whitespace or normalize line breaks for counting, the TXT file’s actual byte size can differ from the displayed calculation.

Published product title limits

Select a platform and field, read its scope and source, then apply the limit. Selecting an option alone does not change your text or calculation. Applying it turns on the character limit, counts Unicode code points including whitespace, and keeps original line breaks. It recalculates the text and clears an old shortened preview, while keeping the source and file preview.

Official field limits checked on 2026-10-16
Platform and field Limit Scope
Coupang registration product name 100 characters sellerProductName in the Korean product creation API; used for order processing, distinct from the customer-facing name.
Coupang display product name 100 characters displayProductName, the customer-facing name on the product page.
Amazon.com non-media product title 75 characters Effective from 2026-07-27, including spaces. Do not apply this preset to media products such as books or DVDs. Item Highlights is a separate field.
eBay listing title 80 characters Item.Title; the subtitle is separate.
Etsy listing title 140 characters The maximum length is separate from advice to write a shorter, readable title.
Google Merchant Center title 150 characters title or structured_title.content for ads and free listings; not a general web-page search title.
Shopify product SEO title 70 characters SEO title in the product CSV; not the ordinary product Title field.

These sources establish field limits, but do not establish a complete counting method for every emoji or combining character. The presets use this tool’s code-point count as a reference. They do not check prohibited characters, required information or every listing rule, and being within the limit does not guarantee that a platform will accept a title. The limits are reviewed values, not a live query to each platform. Check the official guidance and actual entry form before submitting.

You can change any measurement or limit yourself. Once you do, the applied-preset label clears so that your own settings are not presented as the platform preset.

Common questions

Is my text saved or uploaded?

This tool processes the text, filename and file contents in your browser. It does not upload them, save the text or results in browser storage, or keep your current settings for the next visit. Reloading or moving to another tool clears them. Downloaded files are yours to keep or delete.

Why are visible-character counting and shortening unavailable?

Visible-character counting and safe shortening depend on your browser’s Unicode grapheme support. If that support is unavailable, code-point, UTF-16 and UTF-8 counts remain available, but visible-character counting and safe shortening cannot be used. Try a current browser if you need them.
